Executive Summary

Urban renewal and environmental upgrading, including restructuring of traffic circulation

• Pavia River and surrounding area (restoration, tree and lawn planting, and creation of pedestrian paths, a bridge, and catwalks across the river);
• Construction of the Aguieira City Park and the Radial de Santiago City Park
• Construction of a cycling track connecting those city parks, the Cava de Viriato national monument, and other areas;
• Creation of an Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation Centre.

Preservation of archaeological and historical heritage sites

• Creation of pedestrian routes crossing the Cava de Viriato national monument;
• Demarcation and memorial of the demolished embankment of the Cava monument;
• Creation of a new square next to the Viriato statue;
• Renewal of Calçada de Viriato;
• Installation of a new, non-polluting transport system linking Cava de Viriato and the city’s historical quarter.

Restoration of public areas

• Renewal of the area comprising the S. Mateus Showground, through creation of a quality public area;
• Creation of new areas for recreation and leisure;
• Creation of a water feature giving continuity to the Pavia River and construction of adjoining restaurants;
• Construction of a civic and shopping centre on the left bank of the Pavia River.
