Executive Summary
In essence, the Polis Programme for the city of Albufeira aims to:
Enhance the potential of its Old Town Quarter as an urban and tourism entertainment hub:
Giving the Old Town Quarter back to citizens;
Increased recreational areas;
Restricted access to vehicle traffic – “Toll-paying access to Centre”;
Increased pedestrian mobility.
Expand and renew Albufeira’s beach facilities:
Increase beach capacity;
Enhance access to the beach;
Equip and integrate the beach into the City.
Ensure the urban sustainability of the Old Town Quarter and Seafront:
Connect the Centre to the expanding city;
Enhance the urban and focal features of Albufeira’s city centre;
Structure the City for future development.
This strategy materialised into the design of four structuring projects which encompass all the envisaged actions for Albufeira:
- Old Town Quarter;
- Eastern Zone;
- Western Zone;
- Green ring, pedestrian routes and cycling track development.
