Executive Summary
The Polis Program intervention in the city of Leiria comprised the banks of the Lis River and the city’s Historical Quarter.
As concerns the planned actions for the Lis River – the “River System” – the goal is to integrate the river and its surrounding areas back into the city of Leiria, by restoring the river’s historical role as a key component of the city’s growth and one of its structuring leading features.
Pedestrian walkways and paths, a cycling track, parkland areas, sightseeing spots, and recreational and leisure areas will be created along the river, and new pedestrian bridges connecting the banks of the river will be erected, thereby achieving a vast and continuous pedestrian parkland area.
The intervention encompasses both consolidated city areas and several transitional areas standing between the city centre and bordering suburban neighbourhoods.
