Parque EXPO is supplying the technical expertise needed for monitoring the strategy development and implementation process for the proposals presented in the Estudo de Enquadramento Estratégico para a Área Crítica de Recuperação e Reconversão Urbanística de Gaia (Strategic Framework Study for the Critical Urban Recovery and Reconversion Area in Gaia), presented in 2006.
The study aims to rehabilitate the Historic Quarter and define solutions for integrating the quarter within the city's dynamics. It covered an area of 152 hectares, which correspond to the Historic Quarter and the surrounding areas, which include Gaia's traditional city centre, the water front and Cais de Gaia (Gaia quay), the Corpus Christi Convent, the Port Wine cellars and other important buildings.
This project for revitalising the Critical Urban Recovery and Reconversion Area in Gaia, planned over a 10-year timeframe, proposes the land´s urban development and consolidation. The objectives are an increase in population and jobs, the availability of a green infrastructure for public use, along with more parking spaces, and rehabilitation of the buildings.
The municipality has implemented a vast number of proposals contained within the study presented four years ago. Parque EXPO, together with the City of Gaia, will assess that implementation, taking into account the objectives and proposals, through periodic monitoring of the development and implementation of the strategy described.
Parque EXPO, having renowned experience and competence in urban and environmental re-qualification, thus continues to employ a method that has been part of the work aimed at rehabilitating Gaia's Historic Quarter from the conception of the strategy and until its realisation.
